Seeking proposals for the Charlotte Glencross Gallery

The Charlotte Street Arts Centre is seeking proposals for the Charlotte Glencross Gallery.
The Charlotte Street Arts Centre “opens the doors of creative expression to all”, and invites professional artists, emerging artists, multicultural artists and amateur artists, as well as students to apply.

The selections committee will meet to review the proposals after the submission deadline: Friday, January 13th, 2012. Proposals must be received by this date. Applicants will be considered for exhibitions beginning May 2012 through to 2013.

Requirements:
• A 250-word artist statement/ proposal for exhibition
• An arts CV (max 3 pages) or biography
• 10 images of work (JPEGS) on a CD with accompanying image list that specifies titles of work, media used and dimensions of work
• Completed application form and contract

Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope if you wish to have your material returned.

As an artist who has traveled across mostof this country, I would like to take the opportunity to express the gratitudeand joy I feel in returning to my “home” in Fredericton.

When I came on board at the CharlotteStreet Arts Centre, I didn’t know what to expect. Sure, I have countless artsyfriends, but I had very little first-hand experience working toward a commongoal with people from various disciplines and backgrounds. In reflection, Ifeel confident saying that my job was a mind—and more predominately a heart—alteringjourney.

I’d worked at non-profits in big cities andI understood the basic organizing principle: do great things, and do them for next to no expense. This mantrawas a narrow beginning and by working with the team of four unique individualsover the course of 6 months, this simple thought expanded in to a fortress ofpossibility that I couldn’t have imagined. The work that happens at theCharlotte Street Arts Centre is ultimately about passion and connectivity. Thethread that sews this family together is the idea and value of creative being.But again, this image is too simplified to capture the magic that happens. On adaily basis, this small but mighty group stretches to create an extended familyof countless local artists, like-minded nonprofits, and community members who holda similar hope- to allow their passions to be seen and actualized, and theirlove for art and education connected to something greater.

During my time at the Charlotte Street ArtsCentre, I took the opportunity to sit down with artists, workshop participants,executive directors, and tenants. Although the narratives changed, becoming v-e-r-y personal and indeed carryingunique anecdotes of individual transformation, to my disbelief every person hadthe same thing to say: I love this organization.I’m thankful. I want to see the work continue.

I am fortunate to have received two degreesin the artistic field that I’m most passionate about, but the lessons I’veaccumulated while working at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre are fragments ofreal wisdom that I could have only found by working in this front line position.In a world fraught with battles for power, in a social arena where the strugglefor equality of all citizens seems dismal, and on a planet fighting for itsbreath, I have learned that the many whispers from people in the shadows createone powerful voice waiting to be heard. We are at a unique tipping point inhistory where education and wealth will find new meanings. Wealth will nolonger be measured by the weight of a nation’s pockets and weapons, but by thehappiness of its most “disadvantaged” citizens. Education will need not only beconsidered by counting dusty degrees on a wall, but also by watching the contagiousspread of personal accomplishment from honing useful skills and accepting challenges withoutexternal pressures or pre-formatted standards. Art teaches us how to break rulesand how to live freely.

The Charlotte Street Arts Centre is a driving vehicle forpositive change because it allows accessibility to a sustainable and mutuallybeneficial resource- creative expression. During a lower-case r, recession,making less than ideal wages, I’ve experienced an unalterable sense ofrichness. I’ve seen people operate from a place of fullness, I’ve seen artists growfrom mentoring others, and I’ve watched connections and community find form throughpaintings, pottery, words, and yarn, just to name a few.

Without fear of sounding redundant: I love this organization. I’m thankful. Iwant to see the work continue.

The salons will address issues raised by the exhibitions presented in the Rick Burns Gallery, at Connexion. Salons will take place in the Charlotte Street Arts Centre Auditorium, and will be facilitated by a rotation of moderators who will help navigate the topics and keep discussions lively. Stay tuned for more information on the salons, set to begin in November 2011.

The wind whips against the tarp that we have strung up over the table, that Lee casually fashioned from pallets, and my pen bleeds into the soggy paper as I sit down to write about my life as a Professional Artist. The tea bowls I threw on my kick wheel in the early hours this morning, before the kids woke up, sit on the uneven surface of the table in silent contemplation, waiting patiently to be placed in our 14 foot-long kiln.

A few days ago, I finished teaching a short workshop series at the wonderful Charlotte Street Arts Centre in Fredericton, and my students' work is also waiting to be electric-fired. As usual, I am juggling applications, photographing work, blogging my little heart out, and liaising with galleries. The interview for the paper is approaching, but last night I completed the letter of recommendation that my colleague had requested, so I'm feeling ahead of the game.

I stir the bucket of shino glaze with a long stick. My one year-old daughter, Treva, comes trundling around the corner, covered in an elixir of mud, soot, and applesauce. She has a cracked cup in her hand. Horus, her three-year old big brother follows her, wielding a small hammer. Ok, kids! Shards to the shard pile, please, and then Horus, you can come and scrape off those bricks. The little ones get to work. They are as immersed in this process as their parents, and they are the perfect assistants: mostly always keen. The rain starts its percussive song; I adjust the tarp and keep on going, determined to finish preparing the work before dark.

Growing up in Vancouver, I studied piano, violin, ballet, drawing, pottery and painting. But despite my parents' best intentions, I was ill-suited to the institution of public schooling. I finished high school a year early with top marks, but I went on to university feeling diminished and scattered, raging against my own perception of The Machine. During my early twenties, despite myself, I was an artist mostly of anger and of hunger, of pathos and tragedy, expressed through melodrama and impromptu performance. I worked as a writer and an editor, I worked at coffee shops. But, I was lost.

When I finally made it to the backwoods of NB, I had already fallen in love with my husband, the inimitable and genius Lee Horus Clark. There, in the forest, I fell in love with clay and fire, with New Brunswick, and with myself. I apprenticed with Lee for three years, but we are colleagues and partners now; we work together, and it's rich the way we play off each other's forms, ideas, interpretations, riffs. This is a bit of a strange life, though. Anyone who chooses art as a profession must be comfortable with uncertainty, and willing to do... everything. I feel very lucky to be able to balance the more mundane and profane aspects of putting our work into the world, with the calm of the turning wheel, and wildness of our fire in the woods.

It's dark now. We have started our pre-heat, after a simple ceremony, and the flame flickers and dances, crackles and throws its warmth—showing off, always generous, but still, during these first few hours of a firing, slow and meditative. I love this: the late-night shift. The kids are asleep in the truck, cozily snuggled up in the sleeping bag on the wide bench seat. Mesmerized by the flame, my mind turns to abstract thoughts of motion, movement, the way we anthropomorphize entropy, and the inevitable slippage of time into the future. We are what we repeatedly do, I have been told. So, I continue to seek balance, to write, to explore, to play with fire.

LOST & FOUND ITEMS APPEAR IN GREAT NUMBERS AT THE CHARLOTTE STREET ARTS CENTRE!

Everyone is familiar with the lost and found exchange, an act of thoughtfully picking up an item of interest and placing it somewhere public so that its owner may see it.

The Charlotte Street Arts Centre put out an open call to artists to create work for a juried exhibition, on the theme of lost and found. Over twenty local and regional artists responded, creating original works in a variety of media, and will turn the Charlotte Glencross Gallery walls into a spectacular repository for items collected, claimed, altered or offered up. Works will include found objects, carefully documented items, interactive installations and more. You may even discover that missing sock you’ve wondered about.

“One of the participating artists, Carol Collicutt, was driving along the highway and pulled over on the side of the road. Right where she pulled over was a doll that looked like it had been there for a long time. It had grass growing intertwined with its hair. She photographed the doll on the ground where it was, and then brought it home. It’ll be included in the exhibition, along with the photographs. The doll itself and the photos are gorgeous, but it’s also touching how something lost can be the art-goer’s gain – we benefit by our imagined stories about where it came from. A ‘loss’ is not absolute – a ‘found’ turns it around. They are both just passages,” explains Stephen May, chair of the exhibitions committee, and one of the jurors for the show.

The opening reception takes place on Friday, September 16^th from 5-8pm and all are welcome to attend. Enjoy live music by our groovin’ house band, Richard Gloade, Esq. during the reception.

Your social life is about to get the end-of-summer face lift it deserves. We’ve got a funky music festival coming your way because we know that you’ve got one more in you. Who wants to start off the harvest season with a bang? The Charlotte Street Arts Centre does!

New Brunswick Musicians Emerge (NB-ME) festival will kick off on Sept 8th in the Charlotte Street Arts Centre (CSAC) Auditorium, from... 8-11 pm, featuring Owen Dacombe Steel and Isaac & Blewett.

And the jam-packed talent just won’t stop. CSAC will be showcasing a stunning line-up of performers, from across the province, right up until mid-November! With the likes of Richard Gloade, Esq., Joel Leblanc, Aeron McKenna & Tibor McPecze, Scotty and the Stars, The Penny Blacks, Love Storm, Great Balancing Act, Lily Claire, Olympic Symphonium, and Motherhood, this is a marathon music medley not to be missed.

At the end of the festival, our expert panel will crown a group/performer with the Picaroons Festival Choice Performer Award, which will provide cash assets towards propelling their music careers.

The CSAC wants you to join us in celebrating creative, independent, emerging musicians, while making live performances accessible to all New Brunswickers. NB-ME is open to the public by a minimum suggested donation of $5 per double-header show or $20 for an Open Door pass (which amounts to less than 2 bucks a band, are you kidding me?!). The donations will help support the Charlotte Street Arts Centre’s 2012 ArtReach programming.

Advice to Emerging Artists: Grab a Breath of Fresh AIR, by Celine Gorham

At some point in your career as an artist or craftsperson or maker of some sort, you might land an artist residency. If you like to travel, this is probably how you're going to do it. If you've just graduated, this might be a nice transition from student to working professional for you. If you have an idea but lack facilities, this is the way to go.

I recently landed a six month residency and I'd like to share with you some things I've learned while waiting for it to happen.

1. Apply.

I wasn't going to apply for this residency at all. To be honest, it was an ex-boss that found the opportunity and coaxed me into signing up at the last minute. Obviously it worked out well. There is a great deal to be said for applying to things. And being friends with your ex-boss. But mostly being at the right place at the right time. It'll probably be a lot of work, and the deadline might be tight, and maybe you've got a billion other things to do and you're tired, but it'll be worth it. And the more you do it, the better you get, which helps with the next point.

2. Get funding.

A lot (maybe most) residencies don't offer you a stipend. The studio space is your pay, and you're expected to support yourself while there. This will be costly. APPLY FOR FUNDING. APPLY. FOR. FUNDING.

3. Make your own job opportunities.

If you're like me and didn't apply for project and/or travel funding, you're going to need an income. Teach workshops. Do you know how to do something? Yes? Teach it. Even if it seems like child’s play to you, pitch your ideas and see who bites. CARFAC, the artist representation organization, can help you price it.

4. Talk to your AIR (Artist In Residency) program coordinators.

That's not only how I found awesome accommodations for the duration of the residency, it landed me a part time job, got me into guild workshops, and made everything seem a little less scary. ASKING FOR INFORMATION AND HELP is never a bad idea, nor does it make you look dumb! Like simply applying for things, asking questions unearths opportunities.

As the residency has yet to happen, that's about all the advice I've got for you right now. One of the big challenges you'll probably face aside from getting your bearings in a new place will be deciding what to bring with you, so here's an anecdote that will probably not help in any way but will get you thinking about purchasing a smaller suitcase:

Two artists told me about recent changes in their realms: one, doing a printmaking/photography residency brought her camera equipment, special print blocks, and watercolour set. Her prints were challenging and satisfying, and she reconnected with her love of painting still-life. The other artist, doing her MFA in another country, brought nothing. It completely transformed how she worked and what she made.

Premier Alward's painting will be auctioned by the Kidney Foundation as part of their Brush of Hope fundraiser. Special thanks to Jane Stewart, one of our volunteers, who led the workshop today.

Artful New Beginnings at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre

On August 4^th, from 5:00-8:00pm, members of the public are invited to attend the Stroke, Splat, Smash exhibition opening at the Charlotte Glencross Gallery in the Charlotte Street Arts Centre.

Comprised of mosaics by Carrie Lenentine and paintings by Michael Kane and Andrea Brewer, the exhibit will speak to the idea of new beginnings as a unifying theme:

“The chosen materials, working methods, imagery and scale vary significantly, and although we bounced a few ideas off each other we largely worked independently for this show. Most of the pieces were made within the past few months, and many will comprise beginnings of new series, so this exhibit allows insight into our current directions as artists,” said Lenentine.

The artists are no strangers to each other. Lenentine and Kane are siblings, and Brewer is a friend to both. Mirroring this atmosphere of harmony and transformation, the trio offered a portion of their exhibit space to Fredericton Arts & Learning, Inc. to showcase 6 paintings that were created during the recent Heart to Hand project at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre.

WhiteFeather, Executive Director for Fredericton Arts & Learning explains, “Heart to Hand is a project that truly inspires. These paintings were voluntarily created by artists from our ArtReach program, to offer fresh scenery and a chance at new beginnings to the women and children of Liberty Lane. The purpose of art is to empower individual and social change; this kind of work displays how creative expression serves as connection between people, and how this benefits whole communities.”

Stroke, Splat, Smash will remain on display until September 15^th. The opening on August 4 will coincide with the City of Fredericton’s Culture Crawl, and the CSAC hopes you will come by the facility for a visit and a chance to speak with others artists and tenants.

We’ve hired over 50 professional and emerging artists in the community to lead 600 workshops at our partner, like-mind...ed organizations (Boys and Girls Clubs, Chrysalis House, Liberty Lane, First Steps, just to name a few). Basically, we’re going full-throttle and we need your support now more than ever. To the people who help us out all the time- this is our chance to celebrate your golden deeds. Wilser’s Room has offered up their bar space for our free-range beer purposes from 4pm-7pm on June 29. There will be no cover charge and Picaroons, our proud sponsors, will be on site sampling. Plus, we are hoping to have prizes up for grabs. To new volunteers- we don’t make you undergo one of those yawn-fest aptitude tests like in high school. The process is simple. Choose a few tasks that are up your artsy alley. Lost and Found: A September exhibition at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre.

The exhibition committee is looking for submissions for a group theme exhibition exploring the idea of Lost and Found.

Where does the concept lead? Lost umbrellas, bicycles and mittens? Lost youth, dreams and loves?
Artists working in any media are invited to submit up to three images.

There is a form on the Charlotte Street Arts Centre website - www.charlottestreetarts.ca -outlining the process for sending images to the committee.

The deadline for submitting images in August 15, and the jury will notify artists of accepted work shortly thereafter. The exhibition will run from mid-September until late October in the Charlotte Glencross Gallery.

CSAC’s Culture Garden is Underway: Local Entrepreneur to Lead Project

Charlotte Street Arts Centre (CSAC) received its first private donation from Fredericton resident Pam MacDonald, to support the completion of the Culture Garden project. The project, officially launched in 2009 as a Cultural Capitals of Canada initiative, has been further supported with a new infusion of funding assistance from the City of Fredericton this year.

The Culture Garden, which is set to officially open in August, will span CSAC’s backyard and will provide a space for arts, culture and community events, local gardeners, and installations from CSAC’s Artists-in-Residence for years to come.

“The Culture Garden will not only revitalize a community space, but also, through our ongoing acquisition of outdoor installation art, support the City of Fredericton in its mandate to promote more public sculpture. At present, the Culture Garden offers the only designated outdoor installation space in the province. Outdoor installation art is distinct from other public sculpture in that an artist works exclusively within the space to create something that draws upon and responds to the immediate environment,” says WhiteFeather, Executive Director at Fredericton Arts & Learning.

Backyard Betty Design, a local landscape design company, will lead the Culture Garden project with assistance from community volunteers. Kara Doucet, the founder of BBD, recently opened her business in Fredericton with the mandate of not just creating first-rate landscape designs, but also teaching clients how to sustain these efforts.

“After receiving my education and working in the industry, I realized there was a gap in knowledge. BBD provides clients with sustainable and cost-effective designs that promote active composting, water conservation, bio-diversity, crop harvesting, seed saving, and overall land stewardship. Complete with sensory spaces, native plants, walkway paths built from stones already existing onsite, seating space, and vegetation areas for community gardeners, the potential for the Culture Garden is growing with each donation.

FREDERICTON ARTS & LEARNING SEEKS NEW VOLUNTEERS

Fredericton Arts & Learning is a nonprofit organization mandated to promote education and excellence in the arts, in Fredericton and the broader New Brunswick community. Fredericton Arts & Learning is the owner and operator of the Charlotte Street Arts Centre in downtown Fredericton.

The Charlotte Street Arts Centre is a focal point for creation, presentation and education in the arts. Located at 732 Charlotte Street, the centre features the Charlotte Glencross Gallery, the backyard Culture Garden, and many different artists and arts organizations working to create a culture of accessibility to and excellence in the arts. Ongoing activities include exhibitions, workshops, fundraiser events, concerts, and more.

Many of our activities are facilitated by a dedicated group of volunteers, most who have given years of service to support our organization. We are seeking new volunteers to lend a hand, learn from mentors, and take advantage of opportunities for professional development, networking and education in the arts. Whether you are a student, senior, recent retiree, working artist, aspiring artist or educator, etc, we have many areas that can benefit from just a little bit of your time and commitment, and offer you the chance to learn creative skills, meet interesting people and better understand the ins and outs of the art world. Plus, get a chance to meet other volunteers at our annual volunteer appreciation event, or build a profile to be featured during National Volunteer Week. Volunteering is an important part of what makes a community a community.

Examples: Want to learn how felting, paper crafts, jewelry making, etc work? Volunteer as an assistant to help one of our ArtReach artists, while they teach 1.5 hour workshops to underprivileged groups. Want to meet more artists? Volunteer with our exhibitions committee to hang artwork, prep for openings or give guided tours of the exhibitions. Want to beef up your professional CV? Volunteer on another committee, to organize for our annual Haunted House fundraiser, advise on our building developments, or develop policy. We have just the right place for you.
